The subdivision of Greytown land for house building continues to roll on. South Wairarapa District Council's hearings committee will meet on February 17 to hear an application for another slice up of central Greytown land. The block is nestled behind Kuratawhiti Street opposite the camping ground and running down towards West Streetand is owned by Greytown bed and breakfast host Jill Kemp. The proposed subdivision would create a total of 21 lots - one of 580 sq m in the urban zone and 19, ranging in size from 500 sq m to 8000 sq m, in the rural zone with one lot used for common access. Under the provisions of the South Wairarapa District Plan the proposal is dubbed "discretionary activity" because the 19 rural lots are less than the minimum 5ha required of rural residential lots. "Discretionary activity" means the final decision on whether the proposal can go ahead is at the discretion of the council and there is no guaranteed outcome. Mrs Kemp said she wants consent to subdivide the land so that when she feels she can no longer look after it herself she will be ready to move forward. She said in doing the subdividing herself she would be able to maintain the existent beauty of land, something that wouldn't necessarily happen if the land were sold on as it is now. "I'm hoping to get approval to keep the rural atmosphere. I'm doing everything I can to keep the beauty of the place." The main entrance to the proposed division would be from West Street, with walking access from Kuratawhiti Street. A neighbouring residentm, John Gates, who lives next to the proposed foot access, said he had no problem with the plans. He said that as Greytown continues to grow, land will fill up. "It'll be subdivided, it's inevitable. But I think [Mrs Kemp] will do it well. People made a bit of a fuss because they'll lose their view, but no one is entitled to a view anyway. That's a bonus."
