An avalance risk remained so high in the Milford region today that a state highway was closed for a second day running.
Stage Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound was closed today from the lower Hollyford turnoff because of high avalanche hazard risk, the Automobile Association said.
Yesterday dozens of
cars were escorted out of Milford because of threat of a giant snow slip.
The avalanche area is located 91km north of Te Anau and begins at Falls Creek, affecting 21km of the road.
Bad weather today meant the avalanche control team could not use explosives to clear the avalanche zones.
The road was closed overnight and a number of snow fields were closed again today because of bad weather.
Transit New Zealand said SH8 from Omarama to Tarras was open but chains were essential and the road was closed to towing vehicles because of snow.
