Solway College needs to teach more Maori and talk more with the parents of Maori students, says the Ministry of Education.
The school has only 23 Maori students on its roll of 132 and while they are achieving highly, the Education Review Office (ERO) wants the school to consult formally with
Maori parents.
Principal Elizabeth Rogerson said the board of trustees would decide how it could do this in the next year, but said consultation might mean more surveys or meetings.
The school would also look at adding te reo to the curriculum but she said it was difficult given they had such a small roll. Ms Rogerson said overall Solway College had been given an excellent ERO report and she was "very pleased".
A spokesperson for ERO said consultation with the Maori community was a part of national guidelines regardless of whether the achievement level of students was already high.
