A man has been arrested following a hostage drama in the north Wellington suburb of Newlands this morning.
A woman went into Johnsonville police station about 11am and told police her partner had assaulted her, made threats against children at their house and damaged the house, Inspector Simon Perry said.
Police cordoned off the house and emergency services were put on standby while police negotiators visited the house.
The alleged offender answered and speaking briefly was "quite happy to come and give himself up" about 12.15pm, Mr Perry said.
"As soon as the phone call went in, he understood the situation, it was explained to him and he was extremely cooperative."
No one was harmed. The woman and children were at Johnsonville police station but would return home today, Mr Perry said.
A 33-year-old man has been charged with threatening behaviour, possession of cannabis and assaulting a female.
He was scheduled to appear in court tomorrow morning.
