Magnitude 3.9 quake wakes Wellingtonians, rattles windows

Wellingtonians were rattled awake by a “moderate” earthquake this morning.

The magnitude 3.9 quake was centred 10km east of Lower Hutt, at a depth of 14km.

After the 6.32am tremor, more than 7400 people reported to Geonet they had felt shaking.

More than 7000 people reported feeling the quake around the country.

Most reports were centred around Wellington but there were reports as far north as Auckland and as far south as Christchurch.

“It didn’t last long, but it was strong enough to wake me up and it gave the windows a good rattle,” said one Wellingtonian.

“Now THAT was a wobble,” said one person on social media.

“[Two] jolts. Wasn’t the coffee. Great way to wake up!” said another person.
