Liquor store death jury retires for night

A jury deliberating on whether seven people are guilty of various charges in connection with the 2008 fatal shooting of south Auckland liquor store owner Navtej Singh has retired for the night.

The jury began its deliberations about 2.35pm after Justice Graham Lang concluded his summary of the case for and against the seven people who have been on trial for the past month at the High Court at Auckland.

They were sent home about 5pm and will return to the court at 9.30am to resume deliberations.

The trial followed the fatal shooting of Mr Singh during an armed robbery in his Riverton liquor store in Manurewa East in June 2008.

Six people are accused of Mr Singh's murder - Anitilea Chan Kee, Myron Felise, Tino Felise, Eti Filoa, Walter McCarthy and Jason Naseri.

A seventh, Mefiposeta Chan-Kee, is charged with being an accessory after the killing.

Tino Felise, Filoa and McCarthy also face charges of aggravated robbery. Anitilea Chan-Kee, Myron Felise and Naseri have previously admitted charges of aggravated robbery.

Anitlea Chan-Kee has admitted shooting Mr Singh but claims that he didn't know that the gun was loaded when he accidentally pulled the trigger.
