Labour Department boss Christopher Blake has resigned to take over the top job at the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) next year.
Mr Blake has led five public service departments, starting as Ministry of Cultural Affairs chief executive when it was founded in 1991, then moving to the Ministry of Housing, the National Library, and the Departments of Internal Affairs and Labour.
Mr Blake, whose resignation will take effect on December 23, has tertiary qualifications in civil engineering and music.
Civil Aviation Authority director Steve Douglas yesterday also announced his resignation, to take effect on April 5.
