Temporary repairs to cracks in the hull of the log carrier Jody F Millennium were to be completed today before the ship left Poverty Bay.
The Maritime Safety Authority said the vessel, which was stranded off Gisborne's Waikanae Beach for 18 days, would then be moved to Gisborne, Napier, Tauranga or Wellington where her remaining fuel oil and cargo of logs would be unloaded.
"The vessel will then proceed overseas to a dry dock for full repairs," the MSA said in a statement.
No dry docks in New Zealand were big enough to handle the 156m-long ship.
Salvors completed an inspection of the ship at anchor in Poverty Bay near Young Nick's Head about midday.
A large hole measuring about 8m by 1.5m had been found in the No 5 ballast tank.
The plate was bent back from the hole and hanging. It would have acted like a brake in the sand, contributing to the difficulty in hauling the ship free from the sandbank where she had lodged.
Further repairs to the hull would be done at the first port of call, the MSA said.
