Dad's the boss, the kids run and own the store and grandma was up all night helping stack the shelves.
Sounds like a sitcom but it's actually the dynamics of Duncan's Pharmacy which opened in Kuripuni yesterday.
Masterton's Hamish Duncan and his Cambridge-born partner Belinda Baird, both 23, were exhausted and nervous as Kaumatua Joe Mutu blessed the store on its opening at 8am.
Hamish said the whole family, including both grandmothers, had been up until 11.30pm on Sunday putting the final touches on the latest addition to developer Dave Borman's Kuripuni village.
"There's been a lot of late nights over the past week but we're thrilled with how it's come up and the whole area is going to look amazing once everything is finished."
Former Southend Pharmacy owner and Hamish's father, Rodney Duncan, is the charge pharmacist of the new store, while Hamish and Belinda are also qualified pharmacists.
"We decided Dad would be best for the charge role because he's a bit more senior than Belinda and I."
Hamish's younger sister Bella, 18, is back in Masterton on university leave from Victoria University in Wellington and has taken her place in the family store as salesperson.
"Bella is helping out over summer and Mum will also be working part-time when we need her to fill in."
A total of six staff, including only one non-family member, will be running the store from 8am until 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am until 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, he said.
"We have employed Teresa and she's planning to train in dispensary so she can also help out on the pharmacy side. Everyone will be doing a bit of job-sharing until we get everything sorted."
The first sale came before the pharmacy officially opened after a desperate mother needed medicine for her baby, he said.
"She had tried all the other pharmacies but they were all shut and we were here getting the store ready for the opening so she asked if we could help her out, which we did."
Belinda said a family friend of the Duncans was the first person to hand a prescription over the counter. "I guess we were always going to be holding our breath until the first prescription came in and then we ended up getting it before we even opened," she said.
The new business owners have a "decimated" house after ransacking it for furniture and crockery to place in the staffroom, she said. "The pharmacy has been coming first lately but now that we're open we will start working on the house."
Mr Duncan said he is looking forward to some much-needed shuteye after the joiner woke him at 6am yesterday to go and open the store.
"It's been all go and the builders have been fantastic. The consultant came and gave us the all clear on Friday so now we're all set for whatever gets thrown at us."
It's a family affair at Masterton's newest pharmacy
