Beer bottles littered the floor of a wagon that ran into the side of a car in Western Springs yesterday.
Four people were taken to Auckland City Hospital for treatment as a result of the crash - three with moderate injuries and one minor.
Police believe the dark Mitsubishi RVR was travelling down Motions Rd past Western Springs College near the zoo when it misjudged the right-hand bend and struck an oncoming white Holden Commodore just after 4pm.
Two fire trucks were called - one to block off the scene and the other to provide fire protection to rescuers and the injured - as well as ambulance and police.
Both drivers were cut out of their vehicles by firefighters.
"The driver [of the Holden Commodore] was trapped and had suspected back and neck injuries so we had to remove the side of the vehicle for the ambulance guys so they could bring the stretcher over," said Senior Station Officer Paul Turner.
A man and two women in the Holden were taken to hospital - two with moderate injuries and one minor. The Mitsubishi driver was also taken to hospital with moderate injuries and was later tested for drink-driving.
A police spokesman said officers would speak to several witnesses before establishing a definite cause of the crash and these statements would determine whether charges would be laid.
