Another day
King George V did his bit for the British war effort today in 1917 by ordering all families with royal connections to abandon their German surnames. German families had ruled Britain since 1714. His order eradicated the Mecklenberg-Strelitz, Teck, Hesse, and Wettins lineages, while the Battenbergs became the Mountbattens. King George's own Saxe-Coburg-Gotha royal family, which was named after Queen Victoria's German husband, Albert, became the House of Windsor on July 17.
