Indefinite term sought for sex-attack home invader

The Crown wants an open-ended jail term for a man who has admitted attacking three Wellington women in their homes, sexually assaulting two and breaking the jaw of one woman.

Christian Harry Brusey, 46, of Naenae, pleaded guilty to 19 charges in the High Court at Wellington on Friday.

Prosecutor Grant Burston confirmed the Crown wanted the indefinite sentence of preventive detention.

Justice Gendall said the nature and number of Brusey's 202 previous convictions would be considered with the crimes he admitted.

Brusey is in custody pending sentencing on July 5.

He pleaded guilty to various charges, including sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, burglary, robbery and fraud.

Justice Gendall granted defence lawyer Val Nisbet's application to discharge Brusey on five charges dating from the late 1980s.

A police summary given to the court said the first attack had been in Thorndon in April 2000, when a 56-year-old woman was attacked as she slept, tied up, sexually violated and put in a wardrobe while Brusey searched her belongings.

In October and November 2003, Brusey broke into two homes in Aro Valley and Kelburn. The victims, both 49, were tied up and assaulted. Their bankcards were stolen and used after they were forced to give Brusey their personal identification numbers.

One of the women was sexually violated. When she kicked and screamed, Brusey punched her so hard he broke her jaw in two places. He took property valued at $3600 and withdrew $430 from her bank account.

In Kelburn, Brusey became angry with the woman, even though she had told him where valuables were, and hit her across the side of the head with his torch before blindfolding her and tying her spread-eagled to her bed.

He took jewellery and foreign currency valued at $30,830.

In all three homes he disabled phone lines.

His distinctive gold Saab car was shown entering and leaving the area of a bank in Newtown where he withdrew $800 from the last woman's account.

Outside the woman's house police found a cellphone they were later able to show was Brusey's.

On the night of the last attack Brusey had also entered a Newtown home while it was occupied by a family. He took items valued at more than $3000. A cellphone taken during the burglary was later found at Brusey's home.
