Masterton singer Nik Carlson came second in NZ Idol, but he might be top of the pops this Christmas after his first single is released.
Nik, 26, will be recording the single over the next couple of weeks and releasing it in the run-up to Christmas.
He says it will be a
cover of a popular song, but he's keeping the title firmly under wraps for now. He did however reveal that it wouldn't be a carol or a cover of Bing Crosby's White Christmas.
Besides the single, Nik will be working on his own album with NZ Idol music maestros Eddie Rayner and Adrian Stuckey. The album, which will be released by an independent record label, will feature some original songs as well as covers from NZ Idol.
Nik described it as "a token of the show".
Yesterday Nik spoke of his delight at getting to work with Rayner and Stuckey.
"Everybody in the top five wanted to make an album with these guys," he said. "I was the lucky one who got to do it."
He said no date had been set to release the single, but fans should keep an eye out as Christmas drew nearer.
He was keeping his fingers crossed that he would make it to the No 1 spot for December 25.
"That would be amazing," he said.
