A house being transported through the south Waikato town of Tirau fell off the back of its truck and blocked a state highway this morning.
Sergeant Mike Wilson of police northern communication centre said the accident, just south of Tirau on State Highway 5, happened shortly after 5am.
"The road will be
closed for some time. Two cranes are being organised to lift the house back onto the truck," he said.
The cranes were not able to begin work until daylight and the road was still closed at 7.30am.
Constable Chris Hickford of Tokoroa police said police from Taupo were at the scene.
"I imagine it will be a fair while before they can get it back on the truck," he said. "It will be a fair mess."
Houses are often moved at night when the traffic is lightest.
Mr Hickford said it was not clear why or how the house had fallen off. There had been truck accidents in several spots around Tirau in recent years, but he was not sure if this accident was in one of the trouble areas.
