This weekend's Kourarau Road Cliffhanger motorcycle hillclimb takes on an international flavour, with the attendance of an Australian media team. Mick Matheson and a photographer from the Sydney-based Australian Motorcycle News are coming over to do a story on the club and its events. Matheson plans to ride the route, but not in competition, which in the lower stages sees racers approaching 300km/h. The hillclimb is held on the Te Wharau Rd (the Kourarau hydro dam is part-way up this road). This 6.8km road climbs approx. 1000ft and has 27 corners (give or take a slight bend or two). A team of riders are coming from Mt Eden Motorcycles to challenge locals including Tony Sampson for the title King of the Cliffhanger. This year the organisers are incorporating the event with its first ever rally, which will be based at Te Kopi Road. Carterton Mayor Gary McPhee, a great supporter of the sport and the club, has kindly offered his land for the rally's use. The rally will be situated about 500 metres beyond the hillclimb road.
