MAURICEVILLE School pupils, supported by the Wellington Regional Council, are putting stream water under the microscope for their Enviroschools Silver Award project this year.
Yesterday, council environmental officers Richard Romijn and Susan Hutchinson-Daniell led enthusiastic pupils through water testing of a part of the Mauriceville Stream which runs near the school.
Principal
Robyn Hamilton said at least half a dozen tests were done on the water including checking the clarity and colour, did the water smell, how warm was it, how much algae was on the rocks and how many insects lived in it.
Ms Hamilton said the results showed the stream in the part the pupils tested was very healthy and that was confirmed by the trout and eels living there.
There were also plenty of mayflies on the water. which show the temperature of the water was also at an acceptable levels.
Mauriceville School is one of a growing number which want to make a difference to the environment, by way of Enviroschools, an incentive scheme that aims to get schools and local communities actively involved in environmental education and initiatives.
