Rescuing women trapped in the Greytown public toilets is all in a day's work for butcher Gavin Green, after making his fifth rescue in as many years on Monday.
Greytown woman Eileen Ward heard a woman crying out for help and banging on the window and went to investigate.
"I was walking towards the butchers and heard her, so I tried to get her out by jiggling the door but I couldn't so I went to see Gavin next door to ask him for help."
Mr Green, who has been recognised nationally as a champion sausage maker, had to kick the door in to get the woman out, for the second time in the past week.
"It's happened in both cubicles. The council needs to get rid of the sliding doors - the men's toilets don't have sliding doors and they work fine."
The woman was from out of town, and Mr Green said it tends to be tourists who use the toilets and end up getting stuck.
Mike Perry from Wakefield Antiques across the road said there have been a lot of tour buses travelling through Greytown lately, and visitors frequently go to his shop to ask where the nearest open public toilet is because the one across the road is often closed.
"It's a bit ridiculous because they're not open all the time and we pushed to get the crossing put in so people had better access to them, but what's the point in having a crossing when they're not open half the time?"
South Wairarapa District Council infrastructure and services manager Mark Allingham said the council is aware of a continuing issue of broken locks in several South Wairarapa public toilets, and sends builders to install new ones when they are needed.
