Thousands of books are taking refuge at their new premises in the refurbished town hall this week, as Greytown Library staff members remain busy reshelving 16,000 titles in preparation for the big move.
Library assistant Bill Bain said the new premises are more spacious than the former Greytown Masonic Lodge building and, though it's a big job moving 16,000 books, it will be worth it in the end.
"It's a big job but we have the shelving, we have the room and it's a pleasure to have extra room for sorting books on to the shelves," he said. "By the end of the week it will all come together and it will be wonderful."
He said the best thing about the new premises is that it has "more space and more room".
"Not only that, it's the fact that we are now in a refurbished town centre and it's just great it'll be right now for another 100 years."
The library, which doubles as a South Wairarapa District Council service centre, is due to open on July 29, with a grandfather clock donated by D.W. Lawrence to take up residence at the premises.
The Times-Age reported last month that Mike Gray, chairman of the Greytown Town Centre Development steering committee, said the $2m town hall refurbishment is on target for the opening ceremony.
He said the major work had been completed, with just the finishing touches to be done, including landscaping, drainage and parking, to include street furniture and feature lighting for the trees.
