It was a trial by fire for these Juken Nissho employees, as the Masterton Fire Service put them through their paces in a joint fire safety exercise.
In an effort to get out the fire safety awareness message, the Fire Service and JNL have organised training sessions for all of JNL's 350 employees.
The one-hour sessions are held at a specially-prepared area at the factory site, complete with a fire demonstration facility and a fire crew from the Masterton Fire Station. Station officer Garry Nielsen said the programme aims to promote awareness and teach basic skills in fire safety.
"The Fire Service regularly run this demonstration at the fire station, and JNL is the biggest employer in the area, so this is a way for us to increase people's fire safety knowledge, and they can take it home with them," he said.
Each session includes a seminar outlining fire safety procedures in the home, as well as a demonstration featuring firemen setting alight a mock kitchen fire and then using extinguishers to put it out.
There are up to 20 participants each session, and it takes 15 to 20 demonstrations to get through the entire staff at JNL. The health and safety adviser at JNL, Rodney Fraser, said the programme has been very successful in educating staff in fire safety.
"Your chances of being safe at work increase if your employees learn about safety in the home," he said. "The feedback is very positive. They all appreciated it and learnt from it."
JNL has its own fire extinguisher and first aid training on site, and the Fire Service runs this programme as general fire education for the public. Mr Nielsen said the Masterton Fire Service are able to set up a demonstration at the fire station for the public or companies wanting to educate themselves on fire safety.
JNL employee Les Pethybridge said he would recommend the course to anyone. "It was pretty awesome I'd never looked at it like that before. It was a good experience and I learnt something from it," he said.
JNL firebrand employee William Dods, whose home lacks the protection of smoke alarms, said he learnt something from the exercise. "Don't put water on fat fires and get a set of smoke alarms," he said.
