A Dunedin commercial pilot stabbed multiple times in a bathroom cubicle will make a full recovery, her mother says.

The 27-year-old woman was out with work colleagues at the Moose Bar in Te Anau, when she was stabbed multiple times in a random attack early on Sunday.

''Police are saying she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,'' the victim's mother said.

Her daughter had been in intensive care at Southland Hospital for the past two days, but was now doing much better.

''They expect her to make a full recovery. We are just very very lucky she's alive.''

The woman is listed on the Mainland Aviation College Facebook page but when contacted, Mainland Air declined to comment on the incident.

Marama Kiri Pukepuke, 40, of Te Anau, appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Monday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and remanded in custody without plea. She is to reappear in the court on April 29
