AUCKLAND - A widening row over the running of Auckland's Chinese community centre could end up in court amid allegations of undemocratic constitutional changes.
At the heart of the dispute between the Auckland Chinese Community Centre committee and disaffected members are changes made at a controversial special meeting last month.
The main
change means only members of the centre committee can nominate and vote for new committee members.
Some registered members say they were not notified of the meeting, and older members complained it was conducted only in English. Others have questioned the way votes were counted.
Opponents fear that the committee will now move to sell its Mangere community centre.
The committee told the club it had a vision of uniting all the city's Chinese groups under one generic name, the Auckland Chinese Community Centre Sports Club.
The club president, Edmond Yee, said that as a result, basketball and volleyball teams have had to hire halls elsewhere. Mr Yee has written to the Registrar for Incorporated Societies asking for the May 19 resolutions not to be registered because of meeting irregularities.
