Waikato police have closed State Highway 1 in Hamilton after four vehicles, one a crane, crashed.
Senior Sergeant Phil Ruddell said the crash happened at Mangaharakeke and Avalon Dr roundabout near Nawton about 7am.
It is blocking SH1 southbound into the city.
The pileup was "creating some havoc with the traffic", said Ruddell, but he urged drivers to be patient as they got emergency and recovery crews to the scene.
A number of people have been taken to Waikato Hospital with minor and moderate injuries.
