A construction worker died when a crane boom collapsed on him at a sewage works on the North Shore yesterday.
The man, believed to be aged in his 40s, had not been named last night.
Police said he died instantly in the accident at the North Shore City Council wastewater treatment plant, near Constellation Drive, about 7am.
He was trapped in the boom wreckage for some time.
The council's general manager of water services, Geoff Mason, said the man was employed by Downer Construction, which is building a treatment facility at the plant.
The site was shut after the accident and would probably remain closed for a week, Mr Mason said.
"The workers there are very upset about the situation and need some time to deal with the trauma."
The police and Occupational Safety and Health are investigating the death.
The construction company would also investigate it.
