An Auckland construction company has been hit with a massive $225,000 fine after a worker died when a faulty crane failed in Papakura two years ago.
Stresscrete, which works under the Fletcher umbrella, had denied the charge that it knowingly allowed faulty equipment to be used when concrete
worker Esera Visesio died as a crane failed and a concrete slab fell on him in Papakura on March 10, 2005.
The company was convicted earlier this year and in Papakura District Court today was fined $225,000 and also ordered to pay $20,000 in emotional harm to another worker who was injured in the same incident, $5000 legal costs and $130 court costs.
The fine was on top of $250,000 the company had already paid to the dead man's family in reparation.
The fine is believed to be the largest ever imposed for an offence under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.
