Christchurch police bust large drug operation

Illegal sales of synthetic cannabis tipped police off to a larger drug operation running from a Christchurch flat this morning.

Plain clothes police officers involved in the search were also approached by a passer-by looking to buy drugs from the property.

A search warrant at the rental property near the central city netted $2000 worth of methamphetamine, bags of the synthetic cannabis and over $2000 cash.

The intersection of Hereford St and Stanmore Rd were cordoned off for an hour from 7am today while armed police cleared the address.

Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said gang members and a young child were among occupants found at the address.

"The property is divided into two flats and there were seven people at the property including a small child," he said.

"Some of the occupants are members of a local gang."

"While Canterbury Police Specialist Search and a Police dog and handler searched the property a member of the public arrived at the address and told plain-clothed officers they wanted to buy synthetic cannabis."

Mr Quested said the police investigation was ongoing.

"We would like to thank those who provided information which led to the drug seizures today. It only takes one call to disrupt the supply of drugs in your community and we encourage anyone who can provide information of drug dealing in the District to contact Police.

"Canterbury Police are committed to disrupting the supply of these destructive drugs and preventing the harm this illegal trade supports" said Detective Sergeant Quested."
