A strategic board game inspired by Christchurch's Cathedral Square 23 years ago is being transformed into a "world" version for the mass market.
Cathedral is the brainchild of the late Robert Moore who conceived the idea in 1962 while a Royal New Zealand Air Force pilot trainee at Wigram.
However, the tried and tested product did not make it to the market until 1982, by which time Mr Moore was general manager at Brightway Products, an educational toy company.
The game, usually marketed through exclusive tourist resorts and specialty stores, has sold more than 1 million copies in 23 years, about 60,000 of those in New Zealand and Australia.
