Michael Horton has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his services to philanthropy.
Horton is involved with the Rotary Club and the Robert Horton Memorial Trust.
He is the chairman of the Cornwall Park Trust Board and the Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Estate, which selects charities and organisations that receive grants of up to $800,000 annually.
Horton was managing director of Wilson and Horton - the former publisher of the New Zealand Herald - from 1972 to 1995.
He is chairman of Horton Media, a locally owned printing and publishing group established in 1997.
Horton has a reputation as a fearless campaigner for free speech, fostered through his involvement in the community media.
He was a founding member of Triangle Television in Auckland, the first, non-commercial television channel in the country.
