Cambridge firefighters were called to a large blaze yesterday evening near the new Cambridge expressway.
Large flames could be seen licking many metres into the air and thick black smoke billowed from the inferno.
But a Fire Service communications spokesman said the fire was nothing but a controlled burn-off of tree stumps "associated with the new road construction".
Fire personnel were stood down.
