A BYLAW to control the location and signs of brothels is to be formed, Carterton District Council decided at its Policy and Finance Committee meeting this week.
Planning and regulatory manager Milan Hautler said the council is of a mind to make provision for some control, and the meeting agreed unanimously.
The decision to legislate comes after the opening of Wairarapa's first legal brothel at the Taratahi Hotel earlier this month.
The council can implement bylaws controlling the location and signs of brothels under the Prostitution Reform Act 2003.
The idea of a subcommittee was dismissed.
Chief executive officer Colin Wright said after the meeting that a draft bylaw is to be prepared for councillors to discuss.
"We will be looking at what happens elsewhere in the country," he said.
"Most of the bigger cities have operating bylaws in place."
The bylaw will not be a retrospective one.
The council takes two or three months to implement a bylaw.
