A boy found unresponsive at the bottom of a pool at the Palm Springs Thermal Pools northwest of Auckland has died overnight.
The 7-year-old was rushed to Starship Hospital after he was found in the pool about 11.10am on Friday.
Westpac rescue helicopter paramedics arrived to find him in cardiac arrest and managed to resuscitate him.
He had been in a critical condition since but Auckland police this morning confirmed he had died overnight.
A distraught member of the boy's family earlier told the Herald they were "very shaken" about what had happened.
He was with family at the time, police confirmed.
Distraught extended family members had been making their way to Starship over the weekend.
When contacted today, the manager of Palm Springs Thermal Pool said after talking to a family spokesperson, he would keep his stance of not talking about the incident to anybody, including media.
"All I can say is that I have spoken to a family representative and I have assured them that privacy is of the utmost and they have requested of me that I keep my stance of no further comment of any issue surrounding the death of [the boy]."
