Bowls trophy success so close

Wairarapa were narrow runners-up in the Horn Trophy indoor bowls representative match recently in Foxton.

Six rinks teams from Wairarapa, Horowhenua and Bush-Ruahine did battle and at the end of round one it was Bush-Ruahine on 8 points, followed by Wairarapa 6 and Horowhenua 4.

With round two completed it was Bush-Ruahine and Wairarapa level on 14 points and Horowhenua on 8, while round three ended with Bush-Ruahine on 21, Wairarapa 20 and Horowhenua 13.

The fourth and final round saw Bush-Ruahine pull ahead to finish on 30 points, followed by Wairarapa 23 and Horowhenua 19.

Clareville club received 12 entries for their annual triples tournament with the final seeing Kelvin Simonsen and John and Robbie Duncan beating Elva Simonsen, Graeme Day and Tina Patrick.

Equal-third were Kathy Murray and Cynthia and Roger Melville and John and Jenny Mahupuka with Keith Merwood.

Kelvin Simonsen beat Janice Leighton 10-7 in the Masterton Cosmopolitan singles final.
