Better catch on the Bluff

The Bluff oyster season will run for at least the next month after the first three weeks returned pleasing numbers and quality of catch, says Bluff Oyster Management Company chairman David Skeggs.

The season was better than last year as about 25-30 per cent of the 7.5 million quota had been caught in the first three weeks. That worked out at about 20 sacks per boat per day.

The oyster quota was cut from 14.95 million to 7.5 million this season to help spur a recovery of the beds, which some in the industry have described as being in dire straits.
