Scorching conditions steadied the pace in yesterday's Gladstone circuit forcing Australian rider Oenone Wood into a last minute showdown to take her second consecutive stage win in the Trust House women's tour of New Zealand.
Sixty cyclists never broke through four 30km laps of the Gladstone circuit which race director Jorge Sandoval described as controlled.
"It's a different type of racing out there, being a circuit. They're not just trying to get from point A to point B. The race was controlled really well by the New Zealand girls."
Only split seconds behind the pace of Wood was German national team cyclist Larissa Kleinmann who snatched second place ahead of Australia's Jenny MacPherson in third.
Wood had heat from both sides over the finish line, saying afterwards, she had hoped to have an easier race day.
"It was a team effort again and we had a great lead-out. It probably wasn't as aggressive with people focussing more on their own individual sprints."
Sky Sport cameraman Derek Douche was filming the race when "half a dozen girls went down on Millars Road during the first lap."
"Sarah Ulmer went down along with a few others. There were no serious injuries though and they all got back on the bike and carried on."
Today the cyclists will finish the Wairarapa part of the tour with a 125km journey from outside the Copthorne Solway Park to the top of Admiral Hill Road at Gladstone. The cyclists will head off at 10am and expected finish time is 2pm.
