Prominent Auckland defence lawyer Paul Dacre has been appointed Pitcairn Island public defender.
The Pitcairn Island prosecutor, Simon Moore (who is also the Auckland Crown Solicitor), and his deputy, Christine Gordon, are considering whether to lay sex charges against up to 20 island men.
Most of the 20 or so
complainants now live in New Zealand.
Yesterday, Pitcairn Island deputy governor Karen Wolstenholme confirmed from Wellington that Mr Dacre had been appointed public defender.
New Zealanders have also been appointed Pitcairn Island magistrates and judges of the Pitcairn Island Supreme Court.
Karen Wolstenholme said that no decision had been made on whether charges would be laid or where any trial would be held. One possibility is a video link between New Zealand and Pitcairn.
Mr Moore said the people on Pitcairn Island would be notified of any decision first.
