Fears that people would be killed forced police to abandon a chase that reached speeds of more than 200km/h during a lawless weekend on Masterton roads.
Police are still hunting for the driver of a dark-grey Nissan Skyline who evaded police in the morning and again in the afternoon in Carterton.
Masterton Sergeant Chris Holden
said a police patrol recognised the disqualified driver's vehicle about 10.20am on Friday and tried to pull the car over.
The driver of the Skyline put his foot down and police chased him until they reached Ngamutawa Rd when the fleeing man went beyond 200km/h.
Mr Holden said police had to abandon the chase because they feared the driver could have killed himself or somebody else.
Adding insult to injury, the Nissan Skyline was spotted by a person in the afternoon doing burnouts on Hughes Line, Carterton.
Police were called at 3pm but by the time they arrived the driver had fled again.
Mr Holden said the driver was well-known to Masterton police and he was wanted in regards to a number of "open matters" that he could not give further details of.
The chase was only the beginning of a weekend where young drivers disregarded the rules of the road.
On Saturday afternoon two boy racers were charged with "sustained loss of traction" in two separate incidents in Masterton.
A 19-year-old Masterton man was caught doing a burnout in his Nissan Sentra at 2pm after a police patrol happened to come across the incident at the corner of Oak and Massey St.
An hour later an 18-year-old Masterton man spun his Holden Barina, loaded with passengers, into a culvert next to Ziggy's Glass.
Sergeant Holden said the man had been doing burnouts and his car was found facing the wrong way with a small crowd standing around the vehicle.
Things boiled over on Sunday when a frustrated man on Vivian St chased two boyracers down the road with an axe at 5.30pm.
The 23-year-old man alleged two cars, loaded with young people, had been doing burnouts on his street and bottles had been thrown at him.
In retaliation the man grabbed an axe and chased the cars on-foot.
A neighbour called police and the man was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.
