20,000 items damaged in library flood

The flood in the basement of the Auckland central public library on Saturday affected more than 20,000 items, city libraries manager Allison Dobbie said yesterday.

Conservators were yet to establish whether any of the books or sheet music damaged were beyond repair.

City council property manager Malcolm Peterson declined to confirm that a forklift being used on an escalator replacement job struck a water main, causing the flood.
