A worker has been crushed to death on a construction site in central Wellington this morning.
30-year-old construction worker, Laki Paese of Lower Hutt, was killed when he was crushed by a cylinder falling from a crane on the corner of Lambton Quay and Panama Street.
Police believe the cylinder was part of a drill the man was using for piling, which might have fallen as he tried to replace it with a different part just before 9am.
Police have refused to reveal the identity of the man until they speak to his family.
A spokesman for Occupational Safety and Health says an investigation into the death is underway, and Victim Support staff are helping attend to the 40 or 50 workers on the site.
