William Forrester (Sean Connery) wrote one good novel a long time ago and doesn't write any more. He is afraid to leave his apartment and watches the neighbourhood through binoculars from his window.
The recluse attracts the attention of black teens below, particularly Jamal
Wallace (Rob Brown), a brilliant student who hides his talent because basketball is more important than books in the Bronx.
One night he sneaks into Forrester's apartment for a dare, is startled by the old writer and they begin a strange friendship. Jamal gets someone to read his writing; Forrester gets someone to lure him out of his cave.
The story follows an arc that is not too far removed from Good Will Hunting, also directed by Gus Van Sant, also about a working-class genius. The difference: GWH had Robin Williams as a feelgood therapist; Forrester has the class and genius of Connery and the promise of Brown.
