Sports stars with a satorial bent are making design dreams a reality with forays in to the glamorous world of fashion proving their aspirations are more just than a passing flight of fancy.

Fresh from her win at this year's US Open, tennis superstar Serena Williams took on some of the biggest names in fashion world with her first runway show this month's New York Fashion Week with reigning queen Anna Wintour, US Vogue editor, in attendance.

Keeping fashion in the family, David Beckham also launched a clothing line, which the former England captain has dubbed "a capsule collection". The soccer star's wife Victoria Beckham still holds the main title of fashion designer in the household - the ex-Spice Girl showing again at this year's NYFW - goes from strength to strength as a true style maven in her own right.

From the playing pitch to the cutting room table, here are six stylish sports stars making their mark:

Tennis ace Serena Williams hit the catwalk at this year's NYFW with a collection, the star says, was inspired by couture shows like Dior, but with a toned-down vibe.

The range, designed in collaboration with the Home Shopping Network, featured a range of looks including a long sleeveless sweatshirt with the letter "S" on the front, zippered slinky mini-dresses, leopard-print pants and faux-fur jackets. Williams says the line was designed to cater to range of women's shapes and sizes.

Serena Williams says a high point of her debut fashion show was closing with a plus-size model with the tennis star saying "people should look good at every size and feel good and love who they are".

The show closed to wild applause, including from good friend Caroline Woziacki, who Williams defeated in the US Open.

David Beckham

While wife, ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham continues to go from strength to strength as a major player in the fashion industry husband David, no stranger to style himself unveiled his six-piece capsule collection.

The collection included leather motorcycle jackets, distressed jeans and a white T-shirt - all inspired by the English captain's love of his classic biker jacket by iconic brand Belstaff.

The collection might be a collaboration with Belstaff but Beckham says "I have always been involved 110 percent".

"People know that it's what I would wear and that's why people have loved the collection the way they have."

Venus Williams

Serena's big sister Venus has also shown she's got what it takes when it comes to going up against fashion's heavy hitters.

The former world number one tennis star also has a fashion degree and runs established label EleVen - a business venture she set up in 2007 in partnership with US retailer Steve & Barry's.

Williams says the vision of the label it to create clothing with allows women to enjoy and active lifestyle while staying up with trends at the same time.

Maria Sharapova

Another tennis star showing her style also extends to off court fashion, is Maria Sharapova - 2013 French Open winner and part-time model.

Sharapova launched her range of clothing and accessories under her Sugapova label, partnering up with exclusive New York Fifth Avenue department store, Henri Bendel.

The bombshell expanded her range from sweets to fashion in 2013 and her latest collection is in keeping with the light, fluffy, fun vibe of the brand.

The collection includes t-shirts, bags, hats, jewellery and hair accessories with each piece features the same Sugarpova lips motif.

Cristiano Ronaldo

With the Beckham collection keeping the boys looking good on the outside, the job of making sure they're keeping it stylish underneath has fallen to another soccer player - Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo plays for Spanish club Real Madrid and captains the Portugal team. In 2013 Ronaldo launched CR7 underwear - a collaboration with a Danish underwear manufacturer.

The soccer star says he chooses to only work with companies that are fashion orientated, and who will deliver a "superior product to his fans".

Collaborating with Ronaldo in creating the designs was top New York based designer Richard Chai. Chai is known for his work with several high-end brands including Marc for Marc Jacobs.

Dion Nash

While it's not strictly fashion, we wanted to give the Kiwis some love. New Zealand cricket player Dion Nash has turned his hand to producing a range of male skin care products.

According to the former Black Cap, years of standing out under a baking sun inspired him to create the range.

The cosmetic line Triumph and Disaster keeps it pretty real for New Zealand guys, with the Nash hitting it out of the park with a range that looks as stylish as it gets for male grooming products.

The products aren't tested on animals, other than those who work for the company, the website says, and all ingredients are naturally sourced.
