Just a typo, eh?
Famous typos which caused a huge ruckus:
1. Penguin Books of Australia published the Pasta Bible, in which a recipe for tagliatelle and sardines directed home cooks to season with "freshly ground black people". Of course, this was a typo for "freshly ground black pepper" but the mortified publishers discovered the error only after a member of the public reported it to them. More than 7000 copies still sitting in their warehouse had to be destroyed and reprinted.
2. The 2013 Miss Universe Canada contestant, 26-year-old Denise Garrido, was unceremoniously stripped of the crown, which was awarded to contestant Riza Santos instead. Garrido was actually the third runner-up in the competition, but had been mistakenly declared the winner thanks to an inexperienced worker who made a single mistake while typing the judges' handwritten scores into a computer.
Stupidity in action
1. The streets of Jackson, Mississippi apparently have potholes that rival the worst in the US, but the city does not have an adequate budget to fix them, according to Mayor Tony Yarber. His remedy, offered earnestly to constituents in August: prayer. "I believe we can pray potholes away."
2. Selfies are not only stupid, they can be dangerous as driver Jordan Toner, 29, found out. While attempting to lean into a seven-person selfie among his passengers, he crashed the vehicle into a tree, causing numerous injuries.
"This house in Grey Lynn was re-piled two years ago, and the retaining wall beside the footpath was not in the best of health," writes Philip. "No problem, just dump several large concrete blocks on the footpath to circumvent the problem. Pity the poor pedestrian with the pram."
Give the gift of dignity
When women and children escape from a dangerous home, and take shelter at a Women's Refuge, they often do so with nothing but the clothes on their backs. One of the items most overlooked in donations to Women's Refuge is one we all take for granted - underwear. A South Auckland Refuge needs new underwear for women sizes 12 to 22 and children aged 2 to 10. Give the gift of dignity - buy a pack of undies on your next shop and post to PO Box 43092, Mangere, Auckland 2153.
Diversion: Try the cat purr noise generator. "A cat's purr is generally within the range of 40 - 200 Hz. In sound therapy, these frequencies are believed to heal injuries and relieve pain. It is also told that injured cats often purr to help soothe and heal themselves"...
