Readership of the New Zealand Herald and Weekend Herald is on the rise.
There are 57,000 more people each week reading the New Zealand Herald than last year, making a total of 924,000 people over 15 each week who read at least one copy.
The latest ACNielsen readership survey shows increases on every day of the week and on any one day nationally there are 15,000 more readers than a year ago.
In the Auckland market, weekly readership has reached 572,000, an increase of 52,000.
Within the Herald home distribution area, approximately a third of the 15-plus population will read the newspaper on a typical day.
That means that an average issue is read by 517,000 people.
The Weekend Herald has posted the largest increase in the number of readers of any newspaper in New Zealand.
Its readership in the 15-plus population has grown nationally by 30,000 to reach 591,000, 14,000 ahead of its nearest rival, the Sunday Star-Times.
In the Auckland market, the Weekend Herald outstrips any Sunday newspaper by 167,000 readers each week.
In its home distribution area, readership of the New Zealand Herald continues to increase in key groups.
Over a week, the paper is read by 74 per cent of people in the top three occupational groups and 82 per cent of those with incomes above $80,000 a year.
In Auckland, the Herald reaches 90 per cent of top advertising target groups.
The latest readership survey was taken between February and December last year, using a sample of 12,000 people.
The data was based on Statistics New Zealand's detailed final estimates for the New Zealand resident population on June 30, 1999.
The population grew by 5.4 per cent over the year, with 48 per cent of the national growth in Auckland.
