Morrissey has given his blessing for a film to be made about The Smiths, by actor Joe Manganiello.

Best known for his roles in vampire series True Blood and male stripper film Magic Mike, Manganiello and his company, 359 Inc. will produce the film titled Shoplifters of the World, Pitchfork reports.

The film will take place in 1987 when The Smiths announced their hiatus. It is said to be inspired by an urban legend about a Smiths fan who held radio staff hostage, forcing them to play only Smiths' songs.

Music documentarian Stephen Kijak will write and direct the project, and Manganiello will star as the radio station DJ.

Speaking to Collider, Manganiello said Morrissey had given his approval for the film as he had a previous relationship with director Kijak.

"Morrissey agreed to give us the catalogue for a nice, affordable fee. Well, it's not cheap, by any stretch of the imagination, but we have Morrissey's blessing to move forward with The Smiths project," Manganiello said.

"I'm a huge The Smiths fan. It's just really great to be afforded the opportunity to go out and tell stories that I'm really excited and passionate about, like that one."
