Max Key isn't following his father's footsteps into politics anytime soon - he wants to be a musician.

The 21-year-old son of Prime Minister John Key posted on Instagram that he will releasing his new single Forget You on February 16. "I can't wait to drop this," he wrote.

Key had been hyping the news through his Instagram account, telling fans to stay tuned for "a huge announcement".

When contacted by the Herald, Key said he couldn't comment because "I don't really do media at the moment".

Some have suggested the title of his song could be a reference to Amelia Finlayson, his ex-girlfriend who he split from at the beginning of the year.

The pair had holidayed in Maui, Hawaii, with Max's father, Prime Minister John Key, mother Bronagh and sister Stephanie over Christmas.
