TimeOut has gathered together a selection of domestic touring stars and some intriguing imports to help whip up a bit of enthusiasm for this season of high decibels in high temperatures. Here is Boh Runga with her summer picks and tour plans...
Your preferred mode of travel for the summer tour?
The fastest way, but the reality is the one that is the most cost-efficient, which is mainly car or van.
Who does the driving - and what does it say about the internal politics of the band?
Usually there is a tour manager/driver so people can rest up and sleep between gigs. It makes sense to have someone solely concentrating on getting you safely there.
What's on the car stereo?
It's pretty diplomatic. We all take turns with iPhones or iPods or mix CDs. If I'm in the car there will be an unhealthy dose of music between 1970 and 1990. You've been warned.
Your favourite summer venue?
One of my favourites is Black Barn Vineyards. The amphitheatre is perfect for bands. I just love that part of the country.
Where else are you looking forward to visiting which isn't a venue?
Cafes and opshops and antique stores.
Any sage advice about surviving the silly season?
Drink lots of water, eat more than something on a cracker and make sure you've got the cash to get a cab home.
What are your plans for New Year's Eve?
I'm playing Mangawhai Tavern with Anika Moa and Hollie Smith and unlike the recent church tour we have a full band. It will be raucous and fun. Looking forward to it.
Do certain styles of music make more sense during the hot and sweaty months of summer?
Whatever makes your vodka and tonic or glass of rosé taste even better is the right music. I strongly recommend the Adults followed by Anika, Boh and Hollie and then some Fat Freddy's Drop. Just saying.
Is it tough having to work when everyone else is partying and on holiday?
The tough part is being away for a long period of time, but look who I get to travel the country with! My job is excellent.
On tour: Anika, Boh & Hollie. Coroglen Tavern, Dec 30; Mangawhai Tavern, Dec 31. Classic Hits Church Tour with The Adults and Fat Freddy's Drop, 17 dates nationwide from Feb 2- Mar 3. winerytour.co.nz
