Ryan Reynolds made a surprising career announcement on social media over the weekend, revealing he plans to take a "little sabbatical" from making movies after he finishes up his current project, Spirited.
Reynolds, 44, produces and stars in the film alongside Will Ferrell and Octavia Spencer.
"Perfect time for a little sabbatical from movie making," he wrote. "I'm gonna miss every second working with this obscenely gifted group of creators and artists. These days, kindness matters as much as talent. I've been lucky to work with folks who are flush with both."
But Reynolds' actress wife Blake Lively couldn't resist puncturing the sincerity with a playful dig at his expense.
"Michael Caine did it first," she wrote underneath the post – a reference to the recent news that veteran actor Caine, 88, was retiring. The actor himself refuted reports of his retirement in a statement to Fox News: "Regarding retirement, I've spent over 50 years getting up at 6am to make movies, and I'm not getting rid of my alarm clock!" he said.
It's unclear why Reynolds intends to take time out from making films, but he does have a very successful side hustle with his liquor brand American Aviation Gin.
Reynolds and Lively recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, both marking the occasion by playfully trolling each other on social media – a long-running joke in their relationship.
"Our favourite restaurant with her 4th favourite date," Reynolds captioned a photo of the pair at their anniversary dinner.
"Posting this again because I cut out my wife's cute earrings. She trained me better than this. Sorry if I let anyone down," he teased.
It comes after the Deadpool star shed light on his first date with Gossip Girl actress Lively.
"We were friends and buddies and about a year and a half later we went on a double date but we were dating separate people," he explained on the SmartLess podcast.
"Next thing you know, she was going to Boston, I was going to Boston and I said, 'Well, I'll ride with you.' We got on the train and we rode together," Reynolds said, adding, "I was just begging her to sleep with me."
They wed in September 2012 and now have three daughters, James, 6, Inez, 5, and two-year-old Betty.
