But still Hammer wouldn't back down from his original tweet, pointing out that he too had worked with Lee and tweeting that fans should post "his work that touched you the most".
"Posting a selfie makes his death about you and how cool you felt taking a picture with him," Hammer said.
Lee died Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. While his cause of death is not yet known, the Fantastic Four creator had suffered several illnesses such as pneumonia over the past year.
Working in comic books since his teens, it was only in his 50s that Lee, then editor of Marvel Comics, decided to create more flawed superheroes.
Lee introduced The Fantastic Four and following their success Spider-Man, Daredevil, the ZX-Men and Iron Man followed.
More recently Lee was famous for making cameos in the Marvel movies which include franchises Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers.
