The shops were sold to the James Pascoe Group late last month and includes 57 Whitcoulls stores and five Borders stores.
National Distribution Union general secretary Robert Reid says signs were put up at workplaces yesterday to notify staff of the change.
James Pascoe Group spokesman Kevin Turner was unavailable for comment.
