Barfoot and Thompson Greenlane branch agent Liz de Vere said the vendor had been hoping for $600,000 for the unsubdividable property and couldn't believe the final price.
"It was very exciting and the owners were almost in tears."
The property was built by the original owner, Robert "Hugh" Betty, who raised his family in the home and had worked for an electrical wholesaler. His passion was motorbikes and he raced with the Auckland Motorcycle Club for many years.
He died a few months ago aged 98 and this is the first time the "seriously original condition" home has ever been on the market.
Mrs de Vere said it was "just an ordinary brick home".
"People were walking in and saying, 'My god, it's like walking into a history museum'.
"It still has formica benches in the kitchen, the oven should be in Motat, it has a food safe. There would be wooden floors in perfect condition because it was covered in Axminster and the furniture is all mid-century. Plus blue bath and blue bathroom."
The property is north-facing in a quiet street and features an original fireplace in the lounge, a dining area opening on to the deck and a separate garage and workshop.
The buyers were local and had purchased the property as a family home, Mrs de Vere said.
