Electricity retailer Genesis Energy is to raise prices to 85,000 Wellington region residential customers by an average of 6.3 per cent.
Announcing the rise today, the company said it would mean an increase of $77 a year, from October, for residential users with an average consumption of 8200 kWh a year.
Acompany statement said the rise included a $25 increase in network charges, which were being directly passed on to consumers after rating increases by Wellington councils.
Genesis had reviewed its pricing as a consequence of new coal and gas prices, chief executive Murray Jackson said.
"We have taken steps to secure long term fuel contracts to minimise likely further price rises in the near future."
Similar increases had been introduced to the Waikato in May, and to Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa in June.
