Air NZ puts up fares on domestic and trans-Tasman flights

Air New Zealand has announced price hikes for some of its domestic and trans-Tasman fares.

On its trans-Tasman network, the airline will add $50 to all economy-class "leisure return" fares and $150 to the most flexible economy return fare.

Domestically, Air NZ will put up its mid-range "super thrifty" and one-way "thrifty" fares by 5 percent. Other fares remain the same.

The changes become effective from January 12.

The beleaguered airline said the increases were part of the strategy to restore its financial health.

Norm Thompson, an airline vice-president, said in a statement that the trans-Tasman route in particular was still making a loss despite a number of changes to fare prices and conditions in November last year.

He gave an assurance the airline would continue to provide comprehensive trans-Tasman services.
